How it works
Percentage is marks earned divided by marks possible. The letter grade uses the common U.S. ten-point scale — your school or instructor may use a different cutoff, so treat this as a starting point rather than the final word.
percentage = correct ÷ total × 100
| Percentage | Grade |
|---|---|
| 90–100% | A |
| 80–89% | B |
| 70–79% | C |
| 60–69% | D |
| Below 60% | F |
Worked example
Scoring 42 out of 50 on a test.
- Divide correct by total: 42 ÷ 50 = 0.84.
- Multiply by 100: 0.84 × 100 = 84.
That's 84%, a B on the standard scale.
Common questions
Does this account for extra credit?
Yes, indirectly — just enter your actual points earned (which may exceed the base total if extra credit is included) against the base total possible. The percentage can go above 100% in that case.
Why might my school's grade differ from this one?
Grading scales vary by school, country and instructor — some use plus/minus grades, some shift the cutoffs a few points, some grade on a curve entirely. This calculator uses the common flat U.S. ten-point scale as a general guide.
Can I use this for a weighted grade across several assignments?
Only if you first combine your assignments into one correct-points and one total-points figure yourself — this calculator handles a single score, not weighted averaging across categories.
